JAMES CONNERY WINS 2009 BALBEC CUP

Congratulations to James Connery on becoming the 2009 Balbec Cup Champion. He defeated Jack Morris 1 up in the final on Wednesday, October 7th. Well done to both players.

2008 Champion : Tommy Allen

The Balbec Cup for 2008 was decided in Limerick Golf Club, where Tommy Allen, Captain, took on John O’Keeffe, GOY winner. A massive tussle was expected.

Tommy had a fantastic victory over Paul in the Semi final. There was a lot of pressure on the elder brother to perform and he duly obliged with a fantastic performance. The other Semi final had John playing Altus. John progressed in a close encounter to set up a mouth watering tie with the Captain.

The standard of golf in the final was excellent with the lead swapping sides several times. A fantastic 8-iron on the 18th from Tommy, followed by a super putt from 15ft gave him a super birdie and the victory.

Tommy had a tough run in the Balbec this year with victories over JJ Mulcahy, Sean O Connor, Paul Allen and John O Keeffe. Congratulations Tommy on a great achievement.

A Brief History

At the A.G.M.of 1994, Dermot O’Rourke put foward that the essence of competition golf was match play and proposed the introduction of a members’ match play competition. He further stated that he and John Gallagher would act as sponsors.

They donated the beautiful Balbec Cup. A welcome dimension had been added to our calendar.
