This was our last outing in 2011. With the forecast as poor as it was, a larger than expected crowd turned up. As it turned out, the weather didn’t play as big a factor as anticipated as the winner and runner up were both out in the height of the storm. The later starters could not take advantage of the glorious conditions in the afternoon to grab the glory.

The winner on the day was Clement Hehir. This is Clements first victory in the society in the last 12 years and was long overdue. He must have felt the gods were against him as the skies opened for the whole of the front nine but he held his composure and set the clubhouse lead with some lovely golf on the back nine. Well done Clement.

In second place and playing with Clement on the day, was Ger Finn. Ger has had a super year and was very unlucky not to claim the spoils on the day. The other podium spot went to Seamus Moloney. Seamus is renowned for his putting and the beautiful greens in Killarney were a dream for the man from Gotoon.

The other prizewinners were Paul Allen, Tommy Allen and Pat Nagle. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all members for supporting the Vice Captain, Pat Nagle, on his day in Killarney. The prizes were presented in Fitzgeralds Bar on Saturday evening. Many thanks to Mike for making it back to Kilmallock in time to look after us so well on the night.

The Cup and Shield have both been presented to the 2011 winners with Kieran McGrath and Mark Hefferanan winning the Cup for a second time in three years and Ger Finn and Alan Enright taking home the Shield.

The Cup final was a very tight affair with Clement Hehir and Pat O Riardon putting up the challenge for Kiki and Mark. This game could have gone either way but it was the experience of the previous winners which shone true in the end.

The Shield final had the familiar look of a Saturday fourball as John Woulfe and Joe McCormack stepped up to challenge their normal fourball partners, Ger and Alan. Rumour has it this one got fiery but alas for Joe and John, it was the Ger and Alan who came out on top this time.

Well done to all the winners and a big thanks to the competition committee for running all the competitions so well this year.

The Balbec Cup has now taken up residency in the Finn household for the next 12 months. Ger claimed the spoils after cruising through the qualifiers and then making short work of all who got in his way in the matchplay. The final took place last week where Kieran Donegan made a valiant effort to stop the juggernaut but it was to no avail. On his way to victory, Ger claimed the scalp of Paddy Kelly, Kieran Mcgrath, Paul Allen and Kieran Donegan. Congratulations Ger.

The Presidents prize of Mr. Pat O Riardon, for the Kilmallock Golf Society, took place in Charleville Golf Club last Saturday. A massive crowd of 60 golfers turned out on the day to support our President. There was also the added incentive of the fantastic array of prizes that Pat had put up for grabs. Rumour had it that the course was set up to test all aspects of the game and that was certainly the case with some teasing pin positions.

One man who doesnt mind how the course is set up is Kieran Donegan. Another super display from Kieran, his second win in a row after claiming victory in Dundrum, means that Golfer of the year is a mere formality at this stage. Well done Kieran on a super pereformance. Only one major left for the Grand Slam.
The other podium positions went to Gay McAvoy and Willie McCarthy respectively. Gay played super golf and was very unlucky to finish in second place. Willie played out of his skin and was unlucky to be pipped on the line. Now the duck is broken, the prizes will come thick and fast im sure.

The remaining prizewinners on the day were Tommy Barrett, Mark Heffernan, Ger Finn and Seoirse Bulfin. This is Seoirse’s first appearance in the prizes but with the form he is showing lately, i doubt it will be his last. The Past Presidents prize went to Jack Morris. Well done to all the prizewinners on the day.

The crowd went back to Barras where we were treated to the customary BBQ. Thanks to Hilary and Barra for looking after the society so well again this year. Congratulations Pat on a great day.
